Grade Band Selection
ULS provides teachers with standards based curriculum that aligns with the gen. ed. curriculum but is reduced in depth and breadth to accommodate special education students with significant needs through the use of instructional targets. Each lesson has differentiated activities to include all learners. Each lesson plan highlights these expectations for the Level 1 to Level 3 learners.
Students need to have access to the grade band that aligns with their chronological age. This provides them with access to the general curriculum as per IDEA and ESSA. This is a federal mandate and not something simply imposed by n2y, so in keeping with the compliance of the federal mandates, we recommend that students have access to the materials that correspond with their chronological age. All of the activities within ULS have been differentiated to include all learners and accommodating even Level 1 learners who are still working on making a choice or response. The expectations for the students vary according to their differentiated level.
In a situation where student grades span between two different ULS grade bands, the school Administrator should review the standard alignments specific to your state for both grade bands in question and consider if one grade band will accomplish the needs of the students and meet the goals set forth by the school.
Unique Learning System's monthly lessons are presented as thematic units that follow a schedule of topics. Each unit is based on a social studies or science topic and incorporates reading, math, writing, science and social studies activities into the lessons. Each unit comes online one month prior to implementation and stays online for two consecutive months. Two monthly units are available online at a time for access.
Core Materials address routine daily instructional tasks that become the basis for transition planning. Materials and lesson plans include daily living skills, circle time activities, classroom jobs, snack time tasks, recreation and games, home reports, and daily sign-in procedures.
Create a personal binder for each student. The binder is a student management tool for collecting and storing information. This binder contains class information as well as information shared between home and school. As students advance into older grades, they assume increased responsibility in the use of the personal binder.
Search and Download
Use the search bar to quickly locate an activity in the Core Materials. These materials are available as either individual or bulk (one large) downloads. In most cases, Core Materials can be downloaded one time and used for the entire school year.
GPS: Data Collection Center
GPS is the data collection center in Unique Learning System. GPS stands for goals, preferences and skills. The data collection center has an array of assessment tools that can be administered to identify and monitor a student's goals, preferences and abilities in relation to the instructional practices within the Unique Learning System curriculum.
How to Add Students into the GPS
Add your class to the GPS to get started using the data collection center.
