Unique Learning System addresses skills through Instructional Targets at each grade level band. These Instructional Targets align with each state’s extended standards for that grade band. It is often the case that unique learners still require practice or even introduction to foundational skills that are not necessarily addressed as standards in the student’s current grade band. Several tools and resources are built into the Unique Learning System framework to help incorporate these foundational skills into the student’s instruction.
Use the Scope and Sequence documents to view the sequence of skill development for foundational skills. The scope and sequence documents were created to show the scope of skills covered in Unique Learning System and the sequence of skill development across grade bands.
By following the Suggested Monthly Plan, you expose students to all skills listed for their grade band monthly, and provide access to general education curriculum in a comprehensive manner. Foundational skills are Instructional Targets that have been summarized into statements which show the skills that repeat across grade bands. These are represented as Instructional Opportunities in the Scope and Sequence document.
By using Instructional Opportunities, service providers can introduce new foundational skills to students that aren’t critical to the major grade band. This also offers the opportunity for further review and practice of new foundational skills.
