Unique Learning System Leveled Books are evaluated using a set of guidelines that examine text characteristics and the demands placed on the reader. Once evaluated, each book is then given an alpha level based on the criteria. The Leveled Books document, located in the Teacher Reference Materials, provides guidance on each level. The document also shows how Unique Learning System levels correlate to grade level equivalancies*, other popular leveling systems and determines the reading level for the Leveled Books.
* Grade level equivalencies represent the grade level at which a student reading on grade level could read the book independently.
